Understanding SHUTTER SPEED (With Examples) IN-DETAILS..

SHUTTER SPEED

If you are a Beginner Photographer than let me tell you that that it's going to be VERY INTERESTING for you to know about Shutter Speed. In Photography, Shutter Speed plays a crucial role, it's one of the main elements of Exposure Triangle in Photography, if you are new to this field then relate your eyes with the camera it will give you a clear image about everything and will help in understanding..

This is the first part of the EXPOSURE TRIANGLE the next parts link are given below

 (Understanding ISO (with Example) In-Details)

 (Understanding APERTURE (with Example) In-Details)

In this Blog we will learn the following things...
1. What is Shutter Speed?
2. Types of Shutter Speed.
3. How to use the Shutter Speed?
4. What are the things that needs to be kept in mind while choosing the Shutter Speed?
So, here are the preview of the coming things you are going to know, now starts with the first question..

What is Shutter Speed?

We all know that every camera has a sensor, it's the main part of the Camera;
The lights which falls on the sensor board are processed and then forms into a image which we get as a result.
BUT, can you open our eye all the time? No! Right? Similarly the sensor board should be exposed to the light when you are clicking the photos otherwise the sensor will be damaged if it's kept open for times after times.

So, a separate shutter is placed before the sensor board which act as a gate way for the light and we can control MANUALLY too. Here we came to know about Shutter, now the next Question arises that what is SHUTTER SPEED then?

So Basically the duration of time, the shutter is kept open during clicking a photo is known as Shutter Speed .

Types of Shutter Speed.

So, we came to know about Shutter Speed. It's basically the time, so either it can be Faster or Slower.
But, No specific Shutter Speed is either Faster or Slower untill you compare it with other one.

It's measured in Seconds
Example::
1/1000th, 1/500th, 1/250th, ... , 1/2th, 1, 2, 4, 8, ....

How to use the Shutter Speed?

Before picking up the right Shutter speed you need to observe your conditions,

Example 1:
For freezing a moment (Like the Picture Given) you need to use such shutter speed which is needed for it. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHUTTER SPEED YOU NEED?

Well,  it's simple look at the picture given, the moment I've captured had happened within a fraction of second, right? So the preferable Shutter Speed would be near 1/1000th of a sec or even faster. And if you notice I clicked this Image in day time, there is a reason to click the photo in daylight that is given in next section.

Example 2:

Now, if you want to click a Light trails (As Given) or want to click Night Shoots MANUALLY then in both the cases this works. Similarly as said, you need to find  the Shutter Speed suitable for that specific picture, First Look at the picture and Understand.

Now, you might think what is it? Let me tell you that it was just a bike's headlight which was passing by and the waves generated as i was shooting HANDHELD/WITHOUT TRIPOD from the Bus Window. Now look over an another photo of light trails WITH TRIPOD of a train,

(Clicked by me, Journal Aaksh is my YouTube Channel for RAILWAY, if interested you may watch.
Click Here >>Journal_Aakash so see the channel)
Here you can see that everything is Straight there is no Shake in the image only the train was moving so we got a perfect Shot, here I use the Shutter Speed near 8sec, if you want to try too this technique then use the Shutter Speed as need.
For Night Photography, you can use the same technique as the Light Trails the your Subject must be static else the Image won't look good.

What are the things that needs to be kept in mind while choosing the Shutter Speed?

There are some basic thing you need to keep in mind before you set the Shutter Speed for you Photo:

1. Observe the Lighting
If you are preparing for clicking photos like freezing motion then preferable time is the Daytime, BECAUSE the more the shutter speed is faster, the more the image will be darker, so to counteract the darkness you need sufficient amount of light, if not present the use artificial lighting.

2. Maintain the ISO
With faster Shutter Speed the along with darkness the Noise in the Picture also increases, for example::

See the Noise in this pic and now compare it with this,

You can Easily understand the difference, for this you need to minimize the ISO value to get a Noise less image

4. Use Tripod
If you want Intentionally Light trails with wave then you no need to have a tripod, BUT for Night Photography Specially you need to have a tripod, even if you want to click those smooth water fall pics then also tripod is must

5. Filters in Daytime
For Example you want to click a Smooth flow of Water in day time, then you need to use a filter which would darker the image in the beginning, but when you will increase the Shutter Speed the darkness will be minimized as said before,
the more the shutter speed is faster, the more the image will be darker, and the more the Shutter Speed is slower the more the image will be Brighter
