ALL ABOUT ISO
ISO, another part of Photography which will take your Photography into a next-level, if used correctly. This is the second part of EXPOSURE TRIANGLE, the first part (Understanding Shutter Speed) is already on our site click on the link below to see it,
IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SHUTTER SPEED THEN I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO READ THE BLOG OF SHUTTER SPEED ELSE YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND
(Understanding Shutter Speed (with Example) In-Details)
And the last parts link is
(Understanding Aperture (with Example) In-Details)
In this Blog we are going to learn about,
1. What is ISO?
2. What is the relation between Shutter Speed and ISO?
3. How to adjust both of them?
4. Thing you Need to Keep in mind before adjusting ISO.
So the first question which will arise in a beginners mind that,
What is ISO?
In very simple words ISO is the sensitivity of the Sensor or you can say that it controls the quality of image which you are GOING TO CLICK.
If the ISO of your image is LOWER (smaller) then the quality of the image will be the best, as you gradually increase the ISO the Image quality will become worse.
Image with Higher ISO (1600) containing NOISE
ISO itself has only 1 work to do with picture and that is controlling the quality, BUT the combinations of ISO and Shutter Speed give you a wide range of creativity, so,
What is the relation between ISO and Shutter Speed?
First of all let us know what happens when we increase or decrease the Shutter Speed and ISO respectively
ISO:: Increasing (e.g. 3200)
Image:: More Noisy & Brighter
ISO:: Decreasing (e.g. 100)
Image:: No Noise & Normal in Daylight and Dark in Night
Shutter Speed:: Increasing (e.g. 8s)
Image:: No Noise & Brighter
Shutter Speed:: Decreasing (e.g. 1/1000th s)
Image:: Bit of Noise & Darker.
Before playing with the Shutter Speed & ISO you need to know this basic things.
How to adjust both of them?
Let us understand this with some Examples..
Example 1:
Here our Intention was to capture that particular moment, So we need faster shutter speed for that we had took the shutter speed at 1/500th sec;
So our first step is done, but as we know if the shutter speed is faster/decreased then the image will have bit of noise and Under Exposed/Darker. So here we have to play with our ISO. To counteract with the Darkness and Noise we have to take the ISO to the certain level so that we are satisfied with the image in terms of Noise and Darkrness.
NOTE:: In Daylight conditions the Minimum ISO value will not affect the image much due to sufficient amount of light, but the same ISO value will under expose your image if shooting in Golden Hour or Blue Hour or in Night.
So, by practicing the technique a bit you will be able to create you our photography the way you want.
Example 2:
Here we took a Light Trail, without any other talks lets get to the main point.
Also said before in previous blog (Understanding Shutter Speed (with Example) In-Details) that in Light Trails and Night Photography the technique is same, the thing you need to do is practice. For clicking this type of images first of all adjust the Shutter Speed, now here you need to understand that you are clicking a series of image continuously rather you need a image with a specific amount of time, so the Shutter Speed also needs to be higher, let it be about 8 sec. But we know that if we increase shutter speed then the image will be over exposed/brighter, to counteract that we need to decrease the ISO so that the exposure gets normal and after setting this just click the image and that's all.
NOTE :: While Clicking Light Trails or Night photography in the beginning while adjusting the ISO keep the exposure a bit under exposed BECAUSE the shutter speed is more so more light will be entering through the lens and if the image is bit darker from before hand after clicking the image you will get a normally exposed photo. You won't get perfect shot at the beginning but do try this technique and you will get to know about everything by yourself.
So that's the basic technique and examples now let's see the next question
Thing you Need to Keep in mind before adjusting ISO.
Have Closer look:
While Adjusting your ISO before clicking the image, have a closer look to you screen so you will get the idea of the amount of noise in your image.
Use the Least Value:
Always use the least possible ISO while clicking the image. As it gives you the best quality.
